Imperial Sericulture


On 1st May, HIM Empress Michiko put the silk worm seeds on the branches of sawtooth oak trees at the coconery inside Imperial Palace.
The Imperial Sericulture was started by Empress Shoken (1849-1914) to encourage the sericultural industry of Japan. HIM Empress Michiko inherited the tradition to produce silk which is used for making the costumes for religious ceremonies or the gifts for foreign guests.
